Okay, Grandpa Beck is not my grandpa, but rather, the developer of Cover Your A$$ets, but I can tell you that this game is one that makes you feel like one of the family. Merely opening the game, you are greeted by a recipe card by Grandma Beck and a little history on how the Beck family started making games. I appreciate this homely feeling as to who I am providing my money to and not some giant corporation that overworks their employees to death and makes them work OVER 13 HOURS YESTERDAY AND STILL NOT GET EVERYTHING DONE AND SO HAD TO GO INTO WORK EARLY TODAY AND DEAL WITH MAYRA’S BS OF NOT GETTING THE SIMPLEST TINIEST TASK DONE! (Not based on personal experience – thank you, corporate overlords, if you are reading this for the opportunity to help contribute to your success).
As I mentioned in the title, the game Cover Your A$$ets is simple. You aren’t overwhelmed by hours-on-end of reading the rules and then consulting the manual 100s of times to figure out what the heck am I supposed to do when X, Y, and Z happen. A simple game of matching – that’s the premise behind the game. When you have a pair – you can add those cards to your pile, and at the end of the game, you add up the sums of the dollar values printed on the cards – the person with the highest asset total wins – simple.
The fun comes in when you learn about your scheming mother who steals your matches! If, on their turn, one of the other players has the same card as the match on top of your pile, they can steal the match and add it to their own. As such, it is important to cover (Ha!) high-value matches as quickly as possible to protect them from being stolen by laying another match on top. You can counter their robbery attempt by having another card that matches the same asset printed on the matching cards or by using a wild. They use a wild, and you use a wild, they lay another card, you lay another card, and BAM – what a huge takedown and asset addition to your stack towards the end-of-game goal of having the highest value of assets.
While the game is simple, the actual playing of the game is a bit of a strategy. Do I let this small asset stack go and not use my wild to protect something later, or do I use the wild and pray that Grandma doesn’t have a sports car card? If you get good at the game, you may have a coup like my family, and they start teaming up and targeting you – not that the rules allow teams – a bunch of sore losers. It’s fun even including those who are much younger to play as they too can participate and compete rather well.
If you want a copy of Cover Your A$$ets, you can purchase one for less than $20.00. This is well worth the gamble of trying a new game as I am sure that Cover Your A$$ets will be one of those games you break out from time to time when you want to have a simple but fun gaming night.
