Tower Defense, First-Person Shooter, and RTS…Oh My!

I’ve played my fair share of tower defense games, first-person shooters, and RTS games but I’ve never seen them combined into one title. Outpost: Infinity Siege looks to shake things up by combining all 3! Developer Team Ranger appears to be mixing some exciting machinist FPS combat with base building, survival, exploration, and base management. This intermingle of genres might just set Outpost apart from most the other games dropping this year.

While playing in first-person, it looks as though you’ll find a plethora of customization options for various aspects of your loadout and gear. The trailer shows interchangeable armor and weapon parts, which mix up how you take on enemies on foot, but also perks through the “Protoslag” system. You can even view the massive structure you built. It seems like you can construct it however you wish, placing massive weapons in key locations, and setting up defenses to your liking.

Exploration looks like a major component of Outpost: Infinity Siege, as you’ll have to go survey the nearby ruins and wilderness to find materials and resources.

Once you’ve got a basic outpost up and running, it appears that you can use resources to craft new armor, equipment and weapons for the players and facilities for your outpost.

The resources you gather in the world appear limited, so you’d have to pick your upgrades and purchases carefully before more waves of enemies come and try to wipe you out. However, if you’re smart with your choices and use your resources efficiently, you should be able to build yourself a powerful outpost that’s a force to be reckoned with.

Getting away from the FPS gameplay, there appears to be a top-down RTS mode that lets you manage each aspect of their outpost from a “commander” perspective, seemingly choosing what enemies your constructed weapons should focus fire on, and what equipment, load-outs and weapons your other players will take with them into the wilderness.

Needless to say, I’m very impressed and can’t wait to try this out for myself! Combining some of my favorite genres into 1 video game seems too good to be true, but the proof is in the pudding. Did I mention, you’ll also be able to do this co-op with your friends!??
