Secret Hitler is a strategic party game based on World War II political parties. Players are assigned either a liberal or a fascist role with each party having an agenda – to keep the other party from winning.
Players have to be cunning in trying to convey that they are a part of the liberal party, even if they are not! The goal of the fascist role players is to elect Hitler chancellor or to pass enough fascist policies while the liberal party tries to stop them by passing liberal policies or shooting Hitler. The strategy, if you are a fascist, is to pretend that you had no choice and to accuse the other elected member of being a fascist. Players then guess who is telling the truth while creating small subgroups of, hopefully, all like-minded players – sometimes infiltrated by cunning fascists!
Secret Hitler is great at getting everyone involved with stimulating thought, strategy, and negotiation. It’s fast-paced, small, and transportable – great when heading to the bar to play with friends, and is easily recognizable by those in the board gaming community, as it is very popular. In board gaming meetup groups, it is one of those games that, once brought, you are expected to bring over and over again each week, as it is that much fun.
Another point in Secret Hitler‘s favor is that it is easy to teach to others. There is very little learning curve to get new players up and going. After playing a round or two, the new players cannot be distinguished from those who have played many times. Sometimes board games are very complicated, and it takes a while for newbies to grasp what is going on, but not with Secret Hitler.
